Coats fall into the outerwear category (thinks jackets, vests, etc.) and are often an overlooked part of a wardrobe. They need to be functional, keep you warm, and last a long time BUT (in my humble opinion) they should also be stylish! When you wear a coat, it’s the first thing people see. Why not make it count?

Tip #1 - Modify The Coat

In the video, I fold under my hip-length puffer coat to crop it. It gives my proportions a better line and compliments the high-waisted jeans. Never be afraid to tuck, fold, or roll your outwear. We do it with tops and sweaters, why not a coat? This is especially important when wearing waist-length coats as they can cut off your line and make your outfit appear 50/50 instead of in thirds. Watch the video for a full explanation.

Tip #2 - Balance Your Overall Outfit

Know your shape and what it needs to achieve a balanced outfit! I love the teddy coat trend but they are very oversized and without proper styling could overwhelm my frame. My strategy in the video was to add a stand-out boot to draw attention downward. I chose a pair with a pointed toe to add additional length.

If you need help understanding your proportions, I suggest booking a 1-on-1 Style Coaching.

Tip #3 - Add Focal Points

Coats are the top layer of an outfit and often end up being the focal point. Sometimes the coat isn’t enough to make your outfit pop though. If things feel a little flat, I suggest adding a stand-out accessory. In the video, I added a scarf and then a hat to elevate my look. This creates focal points or points of interest for the eye and rounds out an outfit.

Next time you put on a coat, think of it as a part of your outfit instead of a functional item to keep you warm. Take a look in the mirror and see if there are any adjustments you can to balance your shape and make your outfit pop!
