Scarves can be tricky. They’re an item most people own but don’t get much wear out of! Today I’m sharing my top tips to style scarves in a flattering and versatile way. I’ll highlight three different types of scarves and give you directions on how to tie them.

Tip #1 - Silk Scarves

Silk Scarves - For medium and small silk scarves the easiest way to wear them is rolled and tied around your neck. You can tie it like an ascot OR tie it loose in front.

If you’re working with a square scarf, be sure to fold it into a triangle and THEN roll it longways. You want the ends to be on the diagonal as pictured on the right.

Don’t be afraid to wear them as an accessory on a bag or tied in your hair as well!

Long scarf

Tip #2 - Basic Scarves

You know those long, gauzy scarves that are pretty basic? They can be tricky to style so here’s my top tip when dealing with this shape - always wear them on the diagonal. What does this mean? Grab it from the corner and drape it around your neck. It will create beautiful diagonal folds instead of a harsh line on the ends. Wear it long and loose or wrap it around your neck.

You can wear it with one side over the should (as pictured) or bring both ends in front for a classic look.

Blanket Scarf

Tip #3 - Large Scarves

If you own a large scarf, hold the top corners and wrap it around you like a bib. Pull the corners around the back of your neck and leave them long in the front (if this is confusing, check out the video above!). This creates a beautiful draping effect and it’s one of my absolute favorite ways to tie a scarf. You can do it with most shapes and fabrics as long as they’re big enough! You can even do it with a large silk scarf!

This technique works especially well underneath coats and jackets. Try holding your scarves up to your outerwear and see which colors complement each other for a thought-out ensemble.

Pull out your scarves and try some of these techniques! The key is to have fun with it and don’t be afraid to experiment.
